The Origin Story

A Summer to Remember

and a Summer We Forgot

Like many wonderful things, Five Big Rocks started at summer camp.

It was the summer of 2023, and the three founding members of what would become Five Big Rocks were young, bored camp counselors with a little too much time on their hands after camp. The idea came about to form a band for the camp auction, and Alden, Avery and Luna set out to create a cover band for fundraising. In the process, the three of them discovered that they worked well together and spent hours working on creating the perfect show to showcase camper talent and raise money for the nonprofit camp. The resulting set was a wonderful mix of Americana, folk, and rock, incorporating the nostalgia parents craved, the inclusion kids loved, and the talent of three skilled musicians.

After that summer, the camp went on hiatus for a year.  Everyone lost touch, and it seemed like the Auction Band was a once in a lifetime experience. Alden and Luna returned to camp, and Avery was MIA...

It was a chance encounter in a Beaverton Guitar Center on the last day of camp that brought the trio back together. Fresh off of a long, exhausting summer,  everyone was ready to sink their teeth into a new, more mature project. The then unnamed band formed, songs were written, and a kickass bassist and drummer were found.

Drawing on both individual memory and the shared experiences most young adults share as they learn to navigate the world,  Luna's lyrical writing, Avery's compositional skills, Alden's vision, and Jackie's expertise have quickly grown Five Big Rocks into a band with a distinct, powerful message. 5BR seeks to bring the audience to see and feel seen, celebrate the awkward parts of life, and remember to love each other.
